Durga saptha Shathi : Argala etc.,

Today is Krishna Janmaashtami. I would however treat it as Durga Ashtami also, as she was born on this same day at yashoda household, who was to be  brought by Vasudeva replacing Krishna in former's lap. So my posting of today will focus on Durga.....

In his speech from ramparts of Red Fort, Modi asked for a moratorium on what I understood as "hatred" for 10 years in the hope that if development takes place rapidly in these intervening years there will be lesser time for people to indulge in such negative sentiments, which will then gradually fade away from our consciousness.

Perhaps coincidentally, just a few days back on my posting on "rudra prasnah" I had mentioned about offering all "hatred" into the mouth of "rudra". The appeal to shun hatred finds a mention in other religious texts also, making me wonder if that is one sentiment which  if rid, will automatically take care of all positive desirable attributes like beauty/form   fame, victory etc.

For instance there is a prayer which is known Argala stotram as part of preamble to Durga saptha Shathi recital. The word Argala means an "obstacle" which is a surprising title for an eulogy. This has about 25 verses with each verse ending with asking for beauty/form, victory, & fame along with a call for destruction of "hatred". My limited wisdom interprets this as"hatred" being the sole "obstacle" (argala) in the path of attaining the positive attributes I am praying for, I should pray for its destruction.

Any mantra  japa or a parayana or a ordained Vidhi has three special ingredients such as its root, (Beejam) its power (Shakthi) & Keelakam (A bolt) which is specifically spelt out. In simple terms before the commencement of the ritua/mantra etc., I contemplate on it's roots, its strength giver, & finally arrest it there with a bolt as it were, ensuring there is "no leakage" of the power derived from the mantra, etc. (This is my understanding).

The beejam part of DS is the kavacham (invoking different names for different parts of the body for protection) the power part is the Argala, & finally Keelakam. The last mentioned is a set of verses, which among other things offers all that I have & and asked for, to be surrendered to Her & leave it to Her to decide as to what & how much will be needed by me to sustain my current avatar as Vichu, umesh geetha etc., & receive them as Her blessings and seal it there with a bolt.

The recital of the DS starts with this wonderful bhaav. Isn't it beautiful? To me it is....

Happy Durga/Janma Ashtami......

Love

Ekalavya alias Vichu
