Why study Six Sigma?

One of the questions that came up in a recent Six Sigma training program (Camp Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia) and also in an article that I read in one journal dealing with the problem of teenagers in the USA was -
Why Study Six Sigma?
or more concisely
Why Study at all?
A question that was typically answered in my fathers' school (in 1950s) by the Principal with the following retort -(I believe in Tamil) - "Will football give you your daily meal?"
Today such a retort would sound hollow , nay, proved to be hollow, for playing football appears to be far more remunerative than going to school.
The only satisfactory answer that I could give myself from my personal experience was
a Subhashitani (a two line Sanskrit shloka taught to us in grade eight) -

Swagrahe Pujyate Moorkhah, Swagrame Pujyate Prabhu,
Swadeshe Pujyate Raja, Vidwanah Sarvatra Pujyate.

Will today's teenager take the bait? or has the paradigm changed?

  1. Who is this "vidwan", who is worshiped today universally as suggested by this poem. This is either reserved for a Dhoni, or a Shah Rukh, who to my limited knowledge are far away from the kind of vidwath you are talking about.

Unless you earn moolah, there is little chance of earning accolades. The youth of today has an extremely difficult choice to make. Vidwath is just for the sake of gaining it, if you expect rewards, you end up disappointed.

Vidwath is the only reward. Your expertise in 6 sigma is the only reward, you can be content with. Rest of it is incidental.
