From the Archives - Move series - Catalyst (Sep 04)

The ongoing " From the Archives" Contd..... Sep 04. titled "catalysts".

" The word "catlyst" is defined in Oxford dictionary as follows
(a) A person or a thing that precipitates a change
(b) a substance that without undergoing any permanent chemical change increases the rate of a reaction.

In our overwhelming obsession with end results/bottom lines, and what have you, we are unable to identify these catalysts. All the accolades are appropriated by a select few who are on the spot. Worse, qualities such as initiative, enterprise Leadership, etc are also conveniently imputed. To quote Bernard Shaw, "where there is a way, there is a will".

Though not very apt, as an illustration, when Narasimha Rao, took over as PM, a revolutionary reforms program was ushered in thru his FM. Without a full back up, from PM, no FM can ever dream of a sustained performance, as Singh was one of a very few if not the only FM to last full 5 yrs thanks to his PM. Singh continues to hog credit to this day.

To stretch this argument further, the ultimate catalyst would undenaiably be the Lord "krishna" of Mahabharat. He did not take arms throughout the battle, and yet was solely responsible for the victory of the pandavas.

In the corporate world, there are and will be any number of such catalysts who perform their roles not so much because they crave for recognition/promotions, but that's the way they are. They can be found at all levels; from the office boy to CEOs level. Repeated failures to recognise /acknowledge can only lead to high attrition rates.

The moral : It is the catalysts who have to be spotted, nurtured, and recognised.

What is it that prevents us from doing this? Ego perhaps? Think it over..........
