This is a continuing part of posting old pieces from archives.
" A keralite friend often narrates a story of a Namboodri - the astrologer extraordinaire. The narration goes somewht like this.
The Namboodri visits a friend, whose daughter-in-law, is about to deliver. As an astrologer, he is asked to predict the sex of the soon-to-arrive child. The N'ri, says, "A boy" and before he leaves the house, keeps a slip of paper - with the words "A girl" written on it - under the thatched roof.
In the event the child is a girl, N'ri would refer to the slip of paper and claim how his prediction can never be wrong. While the purpose of this anecdote is to take a dig on astrological predictions, there is a more profound message, the astrologer's total lack of humility.
We can find, in today's society, adequate parallells. Be it a psephologist, a meteorologist, a consultant, you, me, you name it, every one has the ability to offer alibis to defend his/her predictions. Not just this, with a brazen effrontery, these set of people, are often hailed as not only being assertive, but also "great leaders". Can there be anything more galling than this? A proper scientific method would entail, that one is able to step back a pace, from one's opinions and willing to see his experiments succeed or fail.
In this modern scientific World, surely there must be enough people, to expose these shams...
Think it over........."
PS dt 4th Oct 2009. This piece looks as if has been posted after reading Naresh's piece of y'day. Let me re-iterate, and re-assure that it's not true and this posting is just uncannily coincidental. Naresh's premonition? I do not know, but providential "will" simply overwhelms me to flippantly damn all scientific enquiry as "dukrung karane". And "govindam bhaja" seems to be the only profoundly meaningful choice, for that ever eluding "peace".
Love folks
Vichu
