A journey thru’ the annals of history

(some words in this blog are explicit and parental guidance is advised)

Truth and Freedom have had a strong tradition in this land and in violation of a shloka -
Satyam Bhruyaat, Priyam Bhruyaat, Na Bhruyaat Satyam Apriyam,
Na Tad Nanrutham Chaiva.
Speak the truth, Speak that which is liked, Do not speak the truth that is not liked,
In consequence therefore, do not speak Falsehood.
- I write as under.

In Vedic times, truth was conveyed by teacher to pupil by word of mouth. What was heard was taken to be truth without even an iota of doubt. There was no need to doubt as truth and freedom abounded everywhere. Thus, the word “Shruti” came to be associated with the word “Vedas”. “Shruti” means that which is heard, and “Vedas” mean that which is known.

With the blessings of elders and with the above background, I speculate that the marauding troops of the barbaric Greeks under Alexander (a known homosexual, a misguided youngster under the tutelage of Aristotle, a vainglorious son of King Phillip of Macedonia) came to India in search of a concept of Zero or “Shunya”. The army was first stopped by Purushottama (an uttama purusha), the king of Hindukush – a land of Hindus, in the region of Saptasindhu (land of 7 rivers), a land of holy men and women, or Rishis, whose only need in life was “kusha” grass of which they made mats, thatched roofs. For other needs, they had families and lived off the land, and possibly contemplated the Glory of the One, who is without name or form.

Stories abound about how the war went, but little do men and women who study history realise that Greek invasion of India was not repulsed by violence of war alone. Nor by fatigue of the Greek soldiers but possibly by a truce of the rishis (visionaries) of the land from both sides who distributed alike to the invaders and the locals, all the benefits of their contemplation.

The rishi patnis, or the wives of the visionaries, not to be left behind, did not think twice before engaging in the oldest profession, not for pieces of silver, but for providing balm to the ravages of war and to spread the message of love. Eunice De Souza, a columnist in today’s Pune Mirror wanted a translation of a poem “Mary Magdalen” (the Holy Mary of Magadha?) in an article containing a literary criticism of an anthology of Malayalam literature by one Mr. Nambisan. I must tell her that it may be tough for Roman Catholics to understand the passion of Christ! They should venerate the Pope and confess to their mentors periodically.

No, this country does need a Section 377 to ratify the tradition of Alexander, or the zealous guardians of a woman’s victorian prudity, or even Brihannala’s transgender foray into reality. Its rishis and rishi patnis have long reconciled with even the horrific practise of paedophilia and written stories of beauty in the Vedas. Those who do not understand may please enquire into Satyakama Jabala’s answer to a question about his parentage.

The present government has a peaceful person as its Prime Minister. His daughter is happily married in USA practising the RTI there with vigor and élan, while the father struggles with truth in his land. Born in Pakistan and forced to be PM in Hindustan, the man is an enlightened economist much like his counterpart in the Opposition. None should test the patience of the docile in this land because intellectual nuclear fission can be as devastating as a real one.

A brief study of history will tell us that philosophy cannot hide a search for naked Truth(nirvana). Nor can it be diverted into streams of logical thought as Ravindranth Thakur so kindly put it in his “Where the mind is without fear” poem, taught to all and sundry in Class X in India.

Truth is the only and adequate riposte to Truth. (We need not extrapolate like Hammurabi for this to mean an Eye for an Eye) . This statement is valid only for the Absolute Truth, not relative truths. Stories, as always, give only entertainment.

For those who seek to know the original, let me say, that this blog was originally written in Times New Roman script, with a Normal + Justified style which allows the title to be Nornal + Centered, Underlined.

Jignyaasaa is a 100 old! Long live Jignyaasaa!

  1. Good one Naresh.......truth, truth,truth......sach ka saamna ? Sorry to drag your elevated article down to Rajeev Khandelwal's level - but I am just totally bitten by the bug of that program. Does anyone else also watch it ? Voyuerism at its height - I must admit - I feel terrible sitting through it and yet just cannot resist it (Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellppppp!) . Suresh gets absolutely mad at what he says is a total waste of my time and energy (or whatever is left of it at the end of the day). What drives these middle class men and women to come on national TV and admit to their deepest, darkest deeds and thoughts. Bravery ? Foolishness? Madness ? Self obsession? I cant get my mind of that Godforsaken programme...Heeeeeelllllllllppppppp !!

Jignyaasaa is only 96 old. though the dashboard says 100, the actual blog reveals its only 96. That's the truth, whether it is pleasing or unpleasant, as truth to borrow ur phrase is the only riposte to truth.

And Madhuri; You seem to be almost apologising for ur inability to get ur mind off that "sach ka saamna" programme. The truth probably is that you like it, but another truth perhaps is that you are not comfortable about this truth.

Being an incorrigible cynic, I wonder how much is the truth behind this truthful serial. Even assuming it is what it claims, and you seem to enjoy it, is nothing to fret about.

Frankly, methinks, no one really knows the "truth". Every one intreprets it in his own way, and the one with the best vocal chord, browbeats every one else into feeling that this fellow's "truth", is the one which is "true".

My heart rending regret, or is it actually my joy, is that "truth" is highly subjective, and there really is no "mass emacipation" envisaged in our texts. Since every one is to himself in this journey to seek the "truth", enjoy "sach ka saamna" baby, as much as you want without a pang of regret. Let universal opinion be "damned"...........

As to myself, I have not seen one episode, to really make a comment.

    Love

  3. Vichu Athan,
The kind of responses that have come into Jignyaasa recently lead me to believe that Jignyaasaa is indeed a hundred old. Atleast we are able to see a 100 entires in the edit mode.
As to a real count, I would prefer a 100 blogs of such quality that every one who has read them vouches for their correctness and thier quality of thought and expression.
That way, we can keep this blog alive, participative and sustainable.
They say it usually rains in Pune on Ganapathi visarjan and as I look out of my window there is a torrent of rain, so long live Jignyaasaa again.
    Naresh
