Blog entry #2, by ALV

"We cannot afford to waste a single minute" was a constant refrain of Lokanatha Thatha. Having decided on a platform "to share" how can I now waste precious minutes and seconds? So here I go, with a total nonchalance, regardless of your moods/preparedness to listen-in.
Gulpa was suggesting that I can include regular quote from Yoga Vaashishta, going by the ones referred to in my earlier piece and since I mentioned that every one of Rama's pleas/unease, was a quotable quote. Lest the puritans jump into a conclusion and question my ability to quote on such a great epic, let me assure that these are verbatim(well almost) from a book given to me by Ambu.
It's my request that these can be from all epics/ upanishads etc, and not confined specifically to Yoga vaashishta. Here I go
1. From Yoga..... " Those knowing the knowable, and resting in the all-pervading spirit, and acquiesing alike all their wants and gains, enjoy life of tranquility".
" fortune like a lamp both burns and blackens it's possessor, until it is extinguished by its own inflamation".
2. From Adhyathma Ramayana. " O' Lord, you are beyond mind and words cannot describe you, yet I dont know how I am blessed with seeing you in a mortal body. I am unlettered, and you are omniscient, and so please Lord, think of the befittest verse to describe yourself and accept those as mine" Shabari to Lord Rama.
3. From Rudram... " Oh Rudra, I offer into your open mouth all those of whom we hate, and all those who hate us" In a differant style, in Durga atharvaseersham there is this repeated prayer of asking for name ,fame, and riches, and for simultaneous destruction of all hatred from one's mind.
Now the Vichiism of the week
"knowledge without humility is like a delicious meal in a used / soiled plate"

  1. The statement from yoga vasistha about the attributes of those leading a tranquil life makes sense. Most of us understand it but don't know what it really is because we have not had that experience. I think that "knowledge" must be about more than just a logical or experiential understanding of facts and statements. It would require outward observation, inner reflection, grace and other influences I dont even know of to attain true knowledge.

The next quote from Adhyatma ramayanam is a great example of a person who "knows". Shabari knew that Rama was the Ultimate being and anything she came up with would fall short of the Ultimate. So she "humbly" sought HIS help on composing a verse in HIS own praise. She was not trying to be humble. The humility was a result of real knowledge. Humility seems to come automatically if there is real knowledge which in turn comes with evolution. It does not seem to be impartable, whereas knowledge, in the loose sense of the word, is.

Probably that is why the hit rate of salvation among bhati yogis in recorded history is far greater than gyana yogis. Bhakti by getting rid of the humility issue first must make the learning of gyana a much faster process.
