With blogging practice becoming more & more rare, I had been- in the last few days- mulling over a variety of "themes" to blog but was not quite able to make up my mind. Today there was a query - among other things- from my brother Subrahmanyam, regarding "Krishna Angaraka Chturdasi" meaning literally a 14th day of waning moon period falling on a Tuesday which is considered very auspicious for any ritual to be undertaken/performed.
It triggered a romantic interpretation for its "auspiciousness" and decided that I will share it with all in the blog. Here I go :
Every one of us is aware - I am sure - about the following story in Mahabhatarth.
Sahadev the fourth pandav, is an eminent astrologer. Duryodhan comes to him & asks for the right day to commence the Kurukshetra war. The latter tells him that Amavasya - the new moon day- will be most potent for kauravs to win the battle.
Krishna had to prevent this: He goes to the river bank to do do "amavasya tarpan" on a day prior namely the Chaturdasi. The entire deva clan along with Suryadev, Chandra all come together to the site to witness this unique thing. When asked why he has chosen to do amavasya trapan on the previous day, the Lord says that Amavsya falls on the day Surya & Chandra are together. And since both are there at the site, the day indeed was Amavasya. The story goes further to conclude that the Lord intervened to prevent the war starting on the regular amavasya day, so as not to rubbish either astrology, or sahadev's mastery over the subject as also to emphasize that "Lord's Will" will ultimately prevail.
Today this day is more famously known as the "bhodaayana amavasya" day.
Now to the Krishna Angaraka chturdasi..: Mars (angaaraka) is born out of a droplet of Shivas perspiration falling on earth and the baby being brought up by Bhumi devi. He is thus known as an anga (limb of Shiva) & Bhumi putra or Bhauma, as per our mythology.
The chaturdasi before Amavsya is also a "Sivaratri day. The texts say that any ritual / mantra japam etc done on this day is more than 100 times potent than doing japam during the Solar eclipse periods. (which itself is considered very potent).
And now to my romantic portion: The day krishna decided to do the tarpan must have been a Tuesday. It was done to ensure Pandavas victory.
Done by Krishna on a Tuesday, on a waning moons 14th day and for the pitrus. Hence the name Krishna angaraka chturdasi. And is auspicious for
(a) Doing Pitru karma like tarpanam,, (b) worshipping shiva,(c) doing any ritual which is propitiatory in nature, for (i) any "kaamyaartha" ritual, (ii) overcoming even the seemingly fated obstacle.
May be next time there is Bhodhayana Amavasya falling on a Tuesday, I will do tarpan on that day instead of on the next day the actual amavaasya day or do tarpan on both days, and pray that all my prarabdhas are destroyed .......
BTW we chose this day to do pooja for Meru & Ambal as part of list of propitiatory rituals after my visit to Kalady during my brother Narasimhan's illness......
Think it over folks........

Vichu,
ReplyDeleteThat's a well written piece, especially about how Lord Krishna made sure He stood by traditional beliefs held by people with proper knowledge and professional integrity ( advising the enemy on a sure way to win his war!) while contriving to get around His own rules when it came to establishing the supremacy of Dharma which we call "His Will".
