This is a allegorical story written by ALN of cypress folks in response in E- Mail to a story carrying the same title forwarded by his sis-in-law Bhavani. I have taken the liberty of blogging it as a "Short Story" to make this title in the blog much more broad based; we have stories by Dhruv, Shruti, and the latest is Dr Suresh. It's my hope that others will join this bandwagon and enrich this space. Amen. The Story follows..... Enjoy folks..... Vichu
ALN's Story:
Once there were these condemned hard working ants(chwa-a modified species) who saw that there was this wily grasshopper(wgh-again a modified species) who maneuvered his safe keeping for the winter too from the chwa's hard earned reserves through a self declared community leadership status for himself with its special entitlements.
One of those was that the wgh does not work, the ants of the community work for him and for an elite few some of whom took on the "onus"of governing and "protectjng"the kingdom and some others ran its commerce. He in turn was to impart "knowledge and wisdom"to all his fellow beings, except the chwas whose only purpose of life was to serve all others and provide for themselves too. Chwas had no right or claim to wgh's and the elite's treasure.
The wgh divided the chwas into several categories depending on their occupations such as tilling the land, milking cows, constructing houses, weaving cloth, stitching shoes and services such as giving haircuts,sweeping,hand-pulling people in carts, cremating the dead and CLEANING THE NIGHT SOIL of the living!!!
The division was unbreakable and for all time as it was determined by birth. This social dispensation was accepted by the chwas without protest though they multiplied the divisions further between themselves so that they too could derive some fun from their dreary lives out of the principle of exclusion.
Centuries passed. Over this time the wghs grew on their knowledge and indisputably contributed to society's overall wellbeing and progress. Arithmetic and astronomy, architecture and ayurveda, music and dance, literature and philosophy-the wghs were behind all human progress. They matured to a stature where their leadership was acknowledged as deserved. No one however felt impelled to question their holding a monopoly on knowledge, intentionally or otherwise, which gave them an
enormous advantage in terms of importance to society and the attendant previleges.
Enter a foreign species. The wghs and the chwas alike found themselves exposed to this super wily species which cynically exploited the glaring divisions prevailing in this "ancient" land to fulfill its ambitions of conquest of the world. They would reward the educated and the accomplished among the natives while letting the under-privileged majority plough their ways.
The wghs found themselves perfectly positioned to take full advantage of the new opportunities, quickly jettisoned duties enjoined on them by their "shastras"and took charge of new responsibilities on behalf of the new species, readily grabbing previleges hitherto not existing. Diwandoms,English education in their land and in the land of the new rulers, university postings, govt.employment et al.
The chwas were seeing all this and then soon enough some of them started voicing their doubts about the fairness of the earlier order. A few from the wgh side joined them in what quickly turned out to be a societal revolution. The era of exclusivity sanctioned by religion came to an end. Simultaneously the occupiers were packed off too. The wghs were left high and dry stripped of both their shastrik as well as their secular previleges. The ants had taken over in their land. The pendulam swung wildly to the other end where it has got nailed. For a few decades it all seemed to be over for the wghs.
Then came Globalization, the fall of communist and socialist ideologies or their deliberate decimation by the west, particularly the US. In keeping with their short but successful history the US welcomed immigrants from all over the world with open arms the only qualifying mark being merit.
The country was looking for youngsters who possessed a sound modern education specially in science and technology, superior analytical skills, management perspective and above all, good knowledge of English. With their fortunate inheritance of proprietary knowledge appropriated over centuries and the advantage of english education in recent times the new generation of wghs or may we say the present day deserving ghs saw themselves as the perfect fit for the American need. And they were.
They started migrating in thousands without having to carry any guilt because they were being persecuted by the liberated chwas in their native land for no fault of theirs but that of their forefathers. The wghs observed that in their new homeland, there were no chwas and that they had to work hard themselves at work and at home. It wasn't a grind however as the ants had it back home because one that put in work in the new land had assured entitlements. The wghs and incidentally many chwas are now the happy and celebrated diaspora.
Back home again, the liberated chwas won't relent from their "we will get even" agenda. Get even with whom? The wghs from whom they sware they will grab their space thru reservations aren't fighting for the space anymore. They are being adopted by someone who has no reservations about anyone in a literal sense. Alas what the wghs did in the past the chwas are replaying now.
Those were lazy, liesurely times. The loss to the community was not palpable. We are a changed world today. The losses resulting from misguided social conduct will be enormous. Many "advanced civilisations" who thought they knew it all doubt their past actions in private. As a culture we are a humble and forgiving people.May God help the chwas and wghs bury their pasts and build their future together.
May God Bless -ALN

ReplyDeleteThis made for fascinating reading. How the ant and grasshopper roles can be reversed depending on your perspective.
While a significant number of both species have moved westward - I think the numbers are still not significant compared to those still in the country which might make the chwas see merit in now becoming the persecutors.
But I agree with Ganesh - the unspeakable horrors taking place in India right now ( and admittedly elsewhere) seem to be hurtling in one direction - pralaya - which seems like the only lasting solution.

ReplyDeleteThe best for the last - the "hatke" story by Gulpa Athan recounting the brief history of human evolution, especially Indian social evolution, through allegorical references to the CHWAs and WGHs, marvelous as it is, provoked the following which I am unable to refrain from sharing -
It goes without saying that the caste system has been one of the few inexplicable and unpalatable aspects of Indian philosophy, which otherwise seems to have answer to many "circular reference" problems ( I love this term from MS Excel , where the software tells us that we are trying to arrive at a solution by writing an equation which require the software to use two values for the same cell, when it can take only one).
I have myself been quite uncomfortable with it despite my fellow WGHs often claiming excesses during the college days from the neo-CHWAs and the reservation system - How can ethical wrongs of system perpretrated thru' millenia be set-off against actions of a few decades? Especially, when even to this day every single WGH worth his name wherever he/she is in the world manages to live with dignity no matter what his/her relative affluence is, whilst today there are still thousands of CHWAs who supposedly commit suicide out of sheer exasperation.

ReplyDeleteThe reason clearly is genetic inheritance of a certain kind of confidence stemming from intellectual superiority that is difficult to prove scientifically for want of accurate data. This can however be easily confirmed empirically. It is this confidence that separates the WGHs from the CHWAs, not social privilege as many have tried to convince me. Manu merely stated the obvious.
Every opponent of Indian philosophical thought resorts to theological tactics, especially the oft quoted Purusa Sukta and the much maligned Manu Smriti. In periods of technological nascency, the barbaric exploitation of man by man in the name of industrial revolution is not taken as an opposing argument for insufficiency of science, whilst a similar transgress by ancient social experimenters (like Manu) draws continuous and recurring refrain centuries beyond its context in time.
Do we criticize a Nebuchadnezzar for a system of jurisprudence which calls for "an eye for an eye"? Then why pick on Manu? Let him rest in peace. Let Manusmriti be enshrined like the Rosetta Stone - script for translation of learnings from a lost society - a society that is neither current nor relevant.
In summary, therefore, any scheme, providing for socio-economic privilege like reservation was never attractive to me as a solution for I felt I was being drawn into a circular reference problem. After all Manu reserved (ordinary) knowledge for a section, and supposedly prescribed some barbaric punishment for its violation and we have socially evolved after millennia to reserve the privilege to acquiring knowledge and therefore it's consequent benefits to those deprived by Manu, but have we given it the minimum required "genetic" incubation period to evolve into the confidence I spoke a few paragraphs earlier. Surely not! The WGHs are way too wily to stay deprived for long and the CHWAs, proper to their name remain condemned by destiny to repeat amongst themselves the mistake Manu would have committed had he envisaged just a few decades for his system to bring forth sufficient WGHs for a sustainable future!
If we are looking at a new social order that could replace the one given by Manu, then it has to be one in which transcendental knowledge ( as opposed to "ordinary" knowledge that I purposefully referred to earlier) is not the preserve of a few - the maximum that one can blame Manu for having attempted. By the mercy of the Almighty, there is no indication anywhere that such is the case now and it is prayer that it be the same hereinafter.
So much for the secular.
Coming to the spiritual, the WGHs and the CHWAs represent the classic knowledge-work ( gnana-karma) dichotomy cleverly disguised in the acronymal names coined by Gulpa Athan right in the preamble of his story. Enough has been written about this dichotomy, so let it rest there.
The change of an yuga is ushered in by the collective aspiration of the society as a whole to higher realms. It is my settled conviction that the WGHs are charged with the responsibility of managing the transition and CHWAs with blissfully shouldering the physical burden without either feeling threatened by other.
Apologies for the long sentences, old habits die hard,

ReplyDeleteMadhri:
Absolutely fascinating piece, Naresh.
I was quite rivetted and had to re- read a couple of times to get the full import.
I must admit when I first read "intellectual superiority" of the upper castes - I thought " oh no, not again"....... I can't help noticing how many from this set assume some God given superiority. But your subsequent thoughts on how thousands of years of privilege can code into DNA - made plenty of sense and is in line with ( my understanding ) of current scientific thought.
And that bit about the perspective and wisdom to live with some dignity irrespective of financial status is also so true and also very likely in the genetic code. I must say I dont think there is any "supposedly" on poor farmers committing suicide in desperation - that is the main cause of hundreds of unfortunate deaths. Driven into desperation by no relief in sight and no idea of possible alternatives.
It seems like wishful thinking that the wgh will guide the chwa into a new dawn over a few thousand years. Good luck with that one. All castes have one thing in common these days - material self interest above all else.
I would like to hear your thoughts on why philanthropy figures so low on the agenda of Brahmins and indeed other upper castes too. Feeding and clothing other brahmins.... Daanam in it's most practiced sense- surely doesnt count for much in any sustainable, strategic sense.
The Parsi community or even the religion-less philanthropic billionaires in the US are doing so much more.
Once again - thanks for a scintillating piece of writing.
Cheers,
Madhuri
Madhuri's reply is like a tonic, quite concealing the bloomer that it was Hammurabi and not Nebuchadnezzar who is attributed with "eye for an eye" stricture.
Thanks again to Madhuri,
Naresh
