"The Trouble with Physics" - by Lee Smolin has been referred to earlier in this space.
Being a stranger to the world of string theories and an admirer of the whole world of physics at that , the paragraph that attracted attention was the one in which the author ponders as to what can possibly be the utility of spending a lifetime behind such theories if they cannot be communicated to another in a single sheet of paper.
Therefore, with obeisance to all great scientists, here goes an attempt -
Critical to the discrimination between background dependent and background independent theories of evreything, is the analysis of randomness of the background. For background independent theories a normality of distribution maybe assumed. For background dependent ones, their specific distribution maybe taken from observed data for analysis. The outputs of the two attempts need to be superposed for a unified theory.
An unsolicited apology to Lee Smolin -
One tends to juxtapose closely associated terms owing to a certain lack of formal education in the physical sciences.
