Sorry Folks; I have not been able to find any reliable/authentic info about the spiritual significance of this tradition, and will confine myself to some sketchy ideas that come to my mind, based on what I have heard. ( Smititi?)
Like wearing a mark on our foreheads as a sanctifying/protection from evil thoughts kind of a tradition, the rangoli with its geometric patterns draws a boundary which sanctifies the area within this pattern, and prevents any evil to penetrate this space. Hence a rangoli in front of the house protects it from evil forces from entry into the house hold. This is done just before dawn, and during the day, since it gets washed out, we do an encore everyday.
Similarly a small rangoli is a normal tradition, for placing a havan kund, a kalash, or any holy item. This is just a security cordon to protect from evil forces, and a tradition practiced over eons for sanctifying a place of worship.
I hope the ladies of the family, would be able to add some more weight to this interpretation of a very old tradition, not that this is inadequate.
Love
Vichu
