Dohas from School - 2

माला फेरत जुग गया, गया न मन का फेर।
कर का मनका डारी दे मन का मनका फेर॥
Maala pherat jug gaya, gaya na man ka pher,
Kar ka Manka Daari De, Man ka Manka Pher.

Jug - Yug - A period of time, Pher - Phirna - to turn, Maala - rosary of beads
Man - Manas-mind Manka - Also rosary of beads Kar - Hand Daari - Phenkna - to throw away

For a long time you have turned the rosary of beads , yet the turns of your mind have not gone(the wavering of the mind is referred to here). Throw away the rosary in your hands, and move the rosary in your mind.(that is do your prayer in your mind, instead of making a show of it publicly)

बड़े न हजई गुणन बिन बिरद बधाई पायी,

कहत धतूरे सौ कनक गहनों गढ़यो न जाई.

Bade na hujai gunan bin birad badhayee paayee,
Kahat Dhature Sau Kanak Gahano Gadhayo Na Jaayee

Hujai - Ho jaaye - To become, gunan - virtue, Dhatura - a wild seed , Kanak - a pun for both the Dhatura and gold, Gahana - Ornament, Gadhyo - from Gaadhna - to embed.

Do not become older without growing virtuous, merely by acquiring prestige,
For even calling Dhatura (which is also known as Kanak or gold) as Kanak a hundred times, you cannot embed it in an ornament.

भले भले को सब दिखें , बुरे बुरे को होई।
दुष्ट युधिस्ठिर न मिल्यो, साधू सयोधन कोइ॥

Bhale Bhale ko sab dikhain, Bure Bure ko Hoee,
Dusht Yudhisthir na milyo, sadhu sayodhan koee.

Bhala - the good or virtuous, Bura - bad or unrightful person, Dusht - Rogue, Sadhu - pious man
Sayodhan - Duryodhan

To the good person, all appear good and to the bad all bad,
Just as Yudhisthir could not find a single bad soul in the whole world and Duryodhan couldn't a good one.

बड़ा हुआ तो क्या हुआ जैसे पेड़ खजूर।
पंथी को छाया नहीं, फल लागे अति दूर॥
Bada hua to kya hua, jaise ped khajoor, panthi ko chaya nahin phal laage ati dur.

Panthi - Traveller

So what if you have grown big, like the palm tree to the traveller,
yields no shade for rest and the fruit is too high to satisfy hunger.

पाहन पूजे हरी मिले तो मैं पूजूं पहाड़।
ताते ये चाकी भली, पीसी खाय संसार॥
Paahan pujay Hari mile , to main pujoon pahaad,
Tate ye chaki bhali, pisi khaay sansar.

Paahan - rock, pahaad - mountain, chaki - chakki, millstone,

If by praying to a rock, I can get Hari, then I will pray to the Mountain,
But better than that is to pray to the millstone, for prayer to it means food for all.
(the purpose of this doha is to stress the importance of work as workship)
