The Princess and the chariot driver : Short Story By 12 yr old Shruti

Rahul and Neha were walking through a forest when they saw something shining through the trees. They tiptoed softly and peered through the bushes. It was a round mirror, a magic one! But Rahul and Neha did not know that. Their house was near the forest. They were used to walking through the forest and collecting things lying around. They had collected many things like a bright red coloured ring, many colourful flowers etc. First Neha picked the mirror up. She saw herself in the mirror and imagined herself to be a princess in a huge palace. Suddenly the mirror started to shake and pulled her into the mirror. Next moment she found herself few meters away from the palace. Suddenly a chariot came and a foot man asked her to get in. She was surprised and then she realised that she was wearing a beautiful dress and had a crown. Meanwhile Rahul was examining the mirror and suddenly it pulled him also in and he found himself as a chariot driver. For a second he looked here and there and suddenly, he was startled by a shout. It was the footman and he was shouting at him to start the chariot. Without knowing what to do, he started to drive the chariot. He droved along a path made.

Inside the chariot was Neha, who could not believe what was happening. She thought “I am actually a princess.” Suddenly the chariot stopped and the door opened. She got down and looked here and there. She did not notice Rahul, but when he called her she ran to help him get down. But before she could get to him some soldiers came and caught her. She knew she was a princess, so she ordered them to leave her, but the soldiers told that the king had ordered them to bring her into the palace, because she had run away. Inside the palace she was punished that she would not be allowed to go out of the palace. She begged to the king to let her meet the chariot driver, instead she was locked into a room. As for Rahul, he was made to clean the stables, brush the horses and was given all sorts of works. Meanwhile Neha was not eating anything and was crying inside the room. Suddenly she remembered about the magical mirror. At that moment a shining figure appeared at the window and fell on her lap. It was the magical mirror. She looked into it and wished that she was back in the forest with her brother and the mirror started shaking and pulled her in and everything vanished. Rahul and Neha found themselves lying on the ground and the mirror was not to be found.

They went home and did not tell anybody anything because they knew that nobody would believe them, but you would won’t you!

Is this a story, thought out and written by you or is it an adapted one?

Your imagination is good, but the story after building up a momentum, suddenly ends comfortably, making me feel that you do not want to see your hero and her sister in trouble for long!!!

It would have been better, if you had thought of some other miracle to make them remember the mirror and gettng back, so that there would have been a surprse element.

Not bad for a start, and I hope, Rushab, Dhruv and others are on board soon.

Over now to Amar Chitra Katha to quickly publish this.

Time also for the other kids to contribute to the children's section.

  4. This is a brilliant effort, Shruti. Keep it up.
I would like every one to give their appreciation / assessment on this wonderful start.
I request Shruti to tell us how she felt (a) when she wrote the story (b) when she was adjudged the best & how is she going to celebrate when the story will come out in the publication ? We would all like to share her joy.

Please do not delay your comments . I look forward to the comments from Rishabh, Dhruv, who are old enough to make their impressions known to Shruti . Come on guys. Let us all applaud.

  5. Dear Shruti,

Your writing is very creative! I can at once imagine magical scenes like those in Harry Potter and more recently in a movie "The Time Traveller's Wife", where a man moves back and forth in time to meet his wife in the past when she was a child or in the future when he has a daughter!

Way to go...congrats on the 1st prize which you richly deserve..amar chita katha comics have been around for generations now doing a great service to society!

  8. Dear all,

    Thank for the appreciating.

Well the first thing I would like to say that I had severe stomach ache when I wrote the story "Princess and the chariot driver". But I would like to thank my mother for all the encouragement she gave me throughout the competition. If she hadn't done that, I was going to quit from the competition. Just thoughts were coming across my mind and my hands were writing them.

Secondly, when my name was announced, I could not believe it and for a moment I was wondering. Then I realised and came out of the wonder world and went ahead to receive the prize. I was so happy that the first thing I did was call up my father and informed him about this. For a long time, I was not able to believe that I have really won a prize.

Presently, I don't know anything about the celebration part. But I am anxiously waiting for that day when the story will be actually published in Amar Chitra Katha with my name being printed as the author.

    Love to all.

  9. It is great that despite the stomachahce you could write so well. It is even more wonderful that you give the credit to your mother. We are all so proud of you. You are talented but also humble and fair. You love your parents so much. You will be an inspiration to others.

  10. Hello Shruti sweetheart

By now, any lingering doubts as to whether yours/other children's pieces would receive an appreciative response, must have vanished.

You write wonderfully, and would be making both your parents very very proud.

    Cheers
