“Paripakkuam”
The overriding mantra of marketing is defined as the ability in converting every desire into a need.. That this may lead one to an extremely unhealthy greed, is not given the consideration it deserves, is borne out by the state the world is in day.
It cannot also be gainsaid that the ultimate quest of every human being, is happiness. And this fascination for a need/demand driven pursuit to create more and more market, and make more and more money, has not been able to get us any closer to realization of happiness.
Almost exactly to the contrary, our forbears, have laid an enormous emphasis on the need to curb our desires/ needs, to be able to have a chance to attain some measure of this happiness.
This ability to understand that happiness is in no way related to achieving one’s desires/needs/wants, has been represented by a word in Sanskrit “paripakkuam” which to the best of my knowledge has no close parallel, in any other language.
But yet, the same forbears, or for that matter the sages amongst them, or our contemporary Gurus, have ever blessed any one of the devout with -anything close to- an ability to achieve “paripakkuam”.
The sad part is that almost invariably the blessings are in the form of perpetuating this endless fulfillment of one’s desires…….
Thus the quote of this week
“paripakkuam is happiness; but yet is it a surprise that no one desires it let alone feel the need for it, in this maddeningly demand driven marketing world, which would totally lose it’s relevance”.
