Slumdog Millionaire ?

I guess we've all experienced pangs of hunger at some time or the other.....and then made a dash to the nearest snack or meal we could find. Ah ! That felt good.

What if there was no snack to reach out to ? What if food when it was avialble was meagre and only left us craving for more.

What if this happened nearly everyday ?

Welcome to India . We house over 240 Million ofthe world's chronically hungry people.

40% of our kids are under nourished

These are not statistics that can be ignored.

What is amazing is how beautifully the GREAT DIVIDE works. Those of us who "HAVE" are wonderfully insulated from those that "DONT".

The only time we seem to notice the other side of the wall is when Slumdog Millioanire gets attention. And then what do most of us do - we bemoan how the western eye catches only the ugly side of India and not our wondeful spirtual side.

Ha ! What a joke ! I can completely understand where Danny Boyle is coming from.

What will it take us to get together and do something that alleviates the condition of such a huge porportionof our populace.

I have no answers...........................................

  2. I am happy that you have raised a topic on which there can be a million legitimate and yet contrasting approaches/ views.I request all the members to put down what they feel about this vast disparity and their own relevance to the addressal of this mammaoth problem. Our understanding of the aspect may be at the level of sympathy, empathy, active inetrvention or anything for that matter. We need not bother to sound politically correct or something . But it is very important that we share our ideas foramlly in this column . This can then mark the beginning of a healthy debating tradtion where we can have our say. It is said that the health of a democracy is as good as its weakest link. The views of the least of our members should be sought and posted. That will mark a great start.

    Best of luck guys .
